Weekend Camping Setup with a Roof Rack – Essentials Checklist
July 24, 2025
A weekend away in the great outdoors starts with one thing: preparation. Whether you’re heading to the coast, the bush or the high country, having the right gear – and a well-equipped roof rack – can make all the difference.
Roof racks give you the flexibility to carry more gear, keep your interior clear and make set-up at camp quicker and easier. But what should you actually bring, and how can your roof rack help?
Here’s your ultimate weekend camping roof rack checklist – essentials only.
Roof Rack Essentials for Camping Trips
1. Roof Platform or Basket
Before you start loading gear, you’ll want a strong, reliable base. A roof platform or roof basket is the foundation for your entire setup. It offers a flat surface or enclosed frame to safely secure your items.
Ideal for: Swags, tents, tables, camp chairs, storage tubs.
2. Roof Rack Tie-Downs or Eye Bolts
No one wants to lose gear on the highway. Tie-down points or eye bolts give you secure anchor locations to strap your gear down tight.
Bonus tip: Use ratchet straps or cam buckle straps. They’re safer than rope and won’t loosen in transit.
3. Awning Mounts + Awning
An awning is one of the best camping upgrades you can make. Mounted to your roof rack, it gives you instant shade or rain cover for cooking, relaxing or getting changed. Set it up in minutes – no need to hunt for tree cover again.
4. Light Mounts or LED Work Lights
Late arrivals or night pack-downs are no fun in the dark. Roof-mounted LED lights make setup safer and more efficient. They’re also great for cooking areas or night-time socialising.
5. Roof Bag or Waterproof Storage
Protect your gear from the elements with a roof bag or weatherproof storage container. This is especially useful for bedding, clothing or electronics.
Make sure the bag is UV-resistant and fully sealed to avoid dust and rain ingress.
6. Jerry Can Holder
For remote camping, fuel and water are non-negotiables. A jerry can holder mounted to your roof rack gives you easy access and keeps heavy items out of your vehicle’s cabin.
7. Shovel or Recovery Gear Mounts
A shovel is a must-have on any off-road adventure. Use shovel holders or recovery gear brackets to mount your tools securely and access them easily if you get bogged.
But Don’t Overload Your Rack!
Always check your vehicle and roof rack’s maximum load capacity (including dynamic and static limits). When in doubt, distribute weight evenly and strap everything down tightly.
