Do You Need a Different Kind of Rack if You Have a Canopy?

Yes. A standard ute roof rack mounts directly to the vehicle’s roof or factory rails. If you have a canopy fitted, that mounting point is gone — the canopy sits between the rack and the vehicle. You need a rack that mounts to the canopy itself, using the canopy’s internal support frame as the anchor point.

Fitting a standard rack over a canopy without the right mounting system compromises load capacity and risks damage to both the canopy and your vehicle. A purpose-built canopy roof rack is the correct solution.

Option 1: Canopy-Mounted Roof Rack

The most common setup — a roof rack mounted directly to the top of the canopy. Tradesman builds these in our Oval Steel series, with custom mounts designed to suit your specific canopy make and model.

• Open end — two sides, open front and rear. Best for ladders and long materials
• Flat deck — no sides. Best for sheet materials and wide, flat loads
• Basket — four sides for maximum load retention
• Tent — three sides at front, open rear, mesh floor for rooftop tent setups

All styles are available in metallic grey, satin black or matt black, with custom dimensions, side heights and accessory mounts available on request.

Who It’s For

Tradies and touring setups where you want to keep your load on top of the canopy — freeing up the interior for tools, gear or a sleeping setup. If you’re carrying ladders, conduit, camping equipment or bulky trade materials, this is your most practical option.

Option 2: Combination Rack

A Combination Rack spans the full length of the vehicle — from the front of the cabin roof to the rear of the canopy. It’s a single rack system that gives you maximum roof space across the entire vehicle.

Tradesman builds Combination Racks with up to 35mm of engineered flex between the cabin and canopy sections — this is critical, because the cabin and canopy move independently under load and over rough terrain. Without that flex, a rigid full-length rack will stress both sections and eventually cause damage.

Tradies who need maximum carrying length — particularly for long materials like conduit, timber or ladder systems. Also suited to fleet vehicles where maximising load capacity across the full vehicle length is a priority. Note that Combination Racks require professional installation and are primarily designed for urban use rather than off-road touring.

What About Just Running a Standard Rack?

Some ute owners try to mount a standard roof rack over a canopy using generic adaptors. This is not recommended — the load rating is significantly reduced, the mounting integrity isn’t guaranteed, and most rack warranties won’t cover canopy-mounted use unless the rack is purpose-built for it.
